NICOLA DE MARIA
Nicola De Maria (B. 1954 Foglianise, Italy) lives and works in Turin.
Considered one of the so-called "magnificent five" of the Italian Transavanguardia, his works dating back to the first phase of production are drawings in pencil, pastel, oil and watercolors. Since the end of the seventies, in addition to works on canvas, he has created wall paintings with a spiritual value, so much so that the work transcends the boundaries of the painting and occupies the exhibition space with the creation of environments. Unlike the other exponents of the Transavantgarde current, as Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Mimmo Paladino, his work remains more focus on abstractionism.
Nicola De Maria describes himself as “one who writes a poem, fingers dirty with paint, while closed off in the heart’s lair are a dog and cat–painting and poetry–which duel for the triumph of art.“
